GENDER BLENDER!! This is the biggun’, the big big biggun’. Now in it’s fourth annual installment (the party previously known as Hey Tranny it’s Tranny), our biggest and baddest-hip-padded-ass party and fundraiser features an insane lineup featuring Seattle’s best and brightest drag genius, including our new hometown SUPERSTAR winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5…. Jinkx Monsoon!
The Islander
docked at 1611 Fairview Ave E

MEN AT SEA! Some of you may have been on our weekly boat and brunch parties last summer, and those of you who were, well your memory might be fuzzy, you do know there is no finer way to spend an afternoon than dancing out on the sun deck of the Islander Champagne cruise, flashing passing by boaters your freshly tanned ass and sipping mimosas (sipping? maybe not that modest).

The best part? You don’t even have to figure out brunch yet (because we KNOW that is an essential part of your day) because we will provide it for you thanks to Kitchen Sink Project, the brunch is FREE and if you are so starving you can’t even function there is additional food available on The Islander. Boarding starts as early as 2:30pm to get your drink and eat on, just be on the boat by 3:45 because once it leaves dock at 4pm there’s no coming back til 7! Featuring two floors of dancing, the main lower deck at the bar with Freddy King of Pants and out on the sun deck, most likely in a jock strap and nothing else, is Brian Maier in from SF.

Located at the amazing FRED Wildlife Refuge we’ve joined forces with TROUBLE to do what we do best, to get an idea of what’s in store for you check out this video from past TROUBLE parties at FRED, kind of mind blowing!

Joining us are some great DJs and performers, including aerialists and acts from Cherdonna Shinatra and her twin CherCher, Artstar, the Can Can Castaways, and JUST ADDED to the lineup Kitten LaRue and Lou Henry Hoover! Two rooms of tunes brought to you by Futurewife, Justice & Treasure, Trouble and yours truly Nark. A mesmerizing end to a ridiculous fest, if you can muster the strength on Sunday you can go hit the parade, best of luck (stock up on coconut water and kombucha).

The Road Ahead (Enja Records), the latest album from Albare, opens listeners’ hearts and minds through the original music and extraordinary musicianship of Albare and his quartet.

ALBARE is the nom de guerre of Albert Dadon, a virtuoso jazz guitarist with a strong melodic sense and a wealth of global influences. Born in Morocco and raised in Israel and France, Albare first worked as a musician in Paris before emigrating to Australia at the age of 27. Albare has been and remains a major force in the Australian jazz scene. He has directed the Melbourne Jazz Festival for many years, and is the chairman of the Australian Jazz Awards.

Not only is Albare a well-known jazz musician, he is also one of Australia’s preeminent real estate entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

In 2008, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him an Order of Australia in recognition of his contributions to the worlds of Arts and Culture.

For his latest CD, the guitarist fuses his Moroccan roots effortlessly with six-string influences ranging from Wes Montgomery to George Benson, drawing on elements of blues and soul, fueled by infectious grooves. The groove is important to Albare, who was an acid-jazz pioneer in his adopted homeland.

Official Parade Press Release: 2013 Fremont Solstice Parade Info: Beer Garden, Music, Food, & More

————————-

Timeline

10:00-1:30 Group paint party.
1:30-2:00 Clean up and organize for ride.
2:00-2:45 Ride to parade.
2:45-3:00 Enter the parade route (after 3:00, don’t try to join up).

Parade-time details

Rendezvous at the start of the parade route – corner of 3rd Ave NW and NW 36th St – at 2:45pm, painted and ready to kick off the parade!

Loop back through the parade route as often as you like, always keeping ahead of the parade, and always keeping to the right side of the street.

Painting parties

Lots of people organize their own painting parties. Smaller groups can be fun. If you are willing to share it with “new friends”, please post to SolCycles@yahoogroups.com. Make sure you get to the parade start on time; joining after that is difficult and dangerous.

Main painting party

We don’t yet have a painting location for 2013. Do you know of a largish site we could rent? If so, please email SolCycleVolunteers@yahoogroups.com!

Here were our 2012 instructions:

The main painting party was at the Old Ballard Library, 5711 24th Ave NW, Seattle.

Please bring $10 ($15 if you want to share paint) to pay your share of the cost of renting and outfitting the site.

Please arrive early; it gets crowded towards the end. Get painted, then move outside to make space for others, unless you are helping others get painted.

Shared paint and paint brushes will be available (though the selection may be thin towards the end). Get some paint in a small container and move away from the table to paint up. Bring the left-overs back to the central table and get your next color.

Please clean up your paint area when you’re done. Bring any usable left-over paint to the central table and throw the rest away.

You can leave stuff at the paint party, but it won’t be available till the clean-up party on Sunday, and its security isn’t guaranteed (though the building will be locked).

The Rules of the Cyclists

Don’t be creepy. Seriously. Don’t stare at people. Don’t take photographs without permission. If you’re not getting painted or helping someone get painted, don’t come.

Be respectful of your fellow painters. The painting party is tight quarters, so try to be mindful of other people getting painted around you.

Be respectful of your fellow cyclists. We’re a big group on a narrow street, and accidents may happen! Ride safely and try to be mindful of other cyclists.

Be respectful of other parade participants. We are just one part of the parade. Be sure to give room to the floats and dancers. Never circle back among the other participants!

Be respectful of parade spectators. The Fremont Solstice Parade is a family friendly event. Of course, folks expect the painted cyclists, but they may not want your junk in their kid’s face. Use good judgment when interacting with spectators.

————–

The Rules of the Fremont Arts Council

No Printed Words: Any printed communications, written words, recognizable logos, signage, leaf-letting, or advertising in any form are prohibited on the parade route. Participants must stretch to express their ideas visually, groups flow together in one juxtaposed whole, and we’re all happily free of logos for the day.

No Motor Vehicles: People take back the streets! Creations are moved with human-power (motorized wheelchairs are always welcome); we’re happily free of cars for the day.

No Live Animals: Dogs, cats and hamsters are happier and logistics are easier without poopers or pooper scoopers (aid dogs welcome).

No Guns or Weapons: Joy and love rule the streets. We are safe and free of guns and weapons for the day.

————–

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Fremont Solstice Parade?
The Fremont Solstice Parade is a community event created and organized by the Fremont Arts Council. It is a fantastic celebration of the return of the sun, complete with larger than life puppets, floats, and street performers. The Solstice Parade kicks off the Fremont Fair which is a benefit for the Fremont Public Association. The parade operates with 4 guidelines – no printed words or recognizable logos, no motor vehicles, no live animals, and no guns or weapons.

Do I have to ride naked?
Of course not, some cyclists chose to wear a little something. Try flesh colored undies for the ladies and speedos for the guys. Buy them cheap at Ross or Marshall’s and you won’t feel a bit of guilt covering them with paint.

Do I have to wear a bicycle helmet?
Yes, if you want to avoid a ticket. In August 2003, the King County bike helmet regulation was amended to include Seattle. Bicyclists in Seattle cited for violating the bike helmet regulation could receive a $30 fine. Creatively speaking, a bike helmet can be the foundation for a whimsical headdress. Think papier mache dragon heads, streamer flames, pinwheels…

How long does it take to be painted?
Depending upon the complexity of your design, painting can take from 45 minutes to 4 hours. If your design consists of a base coat with detail on top, you’ll need to leave time for the base to dry plus time for the whole thing to dry before we ride.

What kind of paint can I use?
There are a number of choices: textile acrylics, theatrical body paint, temporary tattoo paint, the list goes on and on. Whatever you use check each color for the ASTM non-toxic label. I use Speedball textile acrylic. If you plan to sport your paint at apres parade parties you should look into temporary tattoo paint. It’s more expensive, but if applied to clean, oil free skin (that means no sunscreen) it will stay put and look good longer than textile acrylics which are prone to flaking. Leaving flakes on someone’s sofa will not make you a popular guest.

Where do I buy paint?
Daniel Smith and Artist & Craftsman Supply both have Seattle stores and a good selection of non-toxic textile acrylics.
At the paint party, a selection of textile acrylic paint will be available for a suggested contribution of $5.00.

Who will paint me?
Whomever you’d like. Ask your friends. You never know, they may also be interested in riding so you might arrange a painting swap. I’ll paint your back, if you’ll paint mine. Another option is to leave the painting in the hands of the new friends you’ll make at the painting party the morning of the parade. Many people show up with their ideas and a couple of brushes and ask others to help them out. If you have a particular design in mind and it consists of repeating shapes (ex. starfish, angel fish, seahorse) you can speed things along by making stencils ahead of time.

Will the paint come off?
Eventually. Your best bet is lots of warm, soapy water, a washcloth, and a friend to scrub between your shoulder blades. Most paints come off in little flakes so I recommend using a hair snare in your drain to prevent them from mucking up your plumbing.
In 2004, I discovered the miracle of “pressure washing”. I attached a spray nozzle to my garden hose, stood in the middle of my yard and turned the water on, adjusting the nozzle until the water was a concentrated jet. This essentially peeled the paint right off my body. Combined with some sea salt and Dr. Bronner’s and I was clean in a record 30 minutes! It’s probably not a bad idea to stand in a kiddie pool or on a tarp to keep the paint flakes out of your lawn. Last year, I experimented with dry scrubbing first. I used an old, rough washcloth to gently abrade the paint off and then lathered up and rinsed. Like a charm!

I’m a little, um, hirsute. Will my body hair affect my paint?
You can definitely be painted over body hair although it can be a bit trickier to get an even coat. Body hair also makes removing the paint more difficult and more painful. Some folks get into the hair removal aspect while others chose to go au naturel. It’s up to you.

Where can I rent a bike?
Recycle Cycle rents bikes and they’re very close to the end of the parade. I’ve not rented from them, but they’ve always been reasonable when I needed bikes, parts, or repairs.

Gregg’s Greenlake Cycle is farther away, but it also has a good reputation.

Today, more than 80 Washington farmers sell at the Market throughout the year and at the Market’s farmers markets, offering Seattle residents and visitors the freshest and highest quality seasonal abundance from their fields.

Visitor FAQs

How do I get to the Market? Where is parking located?
The Market’s main entrance (home to the famous clock and sign reading Public Market Center) is at First and Pike in downtown Seattle. The Public Market parking garage is easy to locate at 1531 Western Ave. and offers some of the most affordable parking in downtown Seattle. Driving directions to the Market’s parking garage can be found here. Additional parking information is located here.

Where can I stay in or near the Market?
There are two lodging options within Pike Place Market historic district proper: Inn at the Market and Pension Nichols Bed & Breakfast. For other downtown lodging options, please see www.visitseattle.org.

Where can I park an RV in or close to Pike Place Market?
Our parking garage and parking lots cannot accommodate RVs. However, there is RV parking available on surface lots directly across from the Seattle Aquarium on the east side of the 1500 block of Alaskan Way. This is within easy walking distance of the Market.

Where can I drop-off a school or tour bus?
Unfortunately, in Pike Place Market proper, neither our parking garage nor our surface lots are large enough to accommodate school or tour busses. There is parking for busses nearby on city streets on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that they are located on city streets and are subject to City of Seattle parking regulations. Two drop-off spaces are located just behind and west of the Market in the 1600 block of Western Avenue. Busses can also park on the Seattle waterfront on Alaskan Way at piers 62/63. Both of these locations have signage indicating bus parking.

Do you provide lockers or storage for luggage or backpacks?
Pike Place Market is not able to offer any lockers or storage for luggage, backpacks, etc. If you are a cruise-line passenger or a guest in a local hotel, we suggest checking with concierge services on the ship or at your hotel, as storage is more than likely available there.

Do you rent wheelchairs or scooters?
Pike Place Market does not have the capacity to rent wheelchairs or scooters. Wheelchairs and scooters are available for rent from local businesses including the following:

Access Medical Equipment Information
7612 Aurora Avenue N., Seattle, Washington
206-365-7700
Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Saturday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday: Closed

Can I bring my dog to Pike Place Market?
Dogs or any other pets are not allowed inside Market buildings (with the exception of service animals).

Where is Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority (PDA) office located?
Pike Place Market PDA office is located at 85 Pike Street, Room 500 Seattle, WA 98101. The office is located just south of Don & Joe’s Meats down a cement staircase wedged between Mt. Townsend Creamery on the left and Market Spice on the right. Above the staircase is a neon sign that says “Market Office”. The closest major landmark to the staircase is Rachel the Pig, located directly under the clock and sign near First Street and Pike Place. The office is open Monday-Friday from 8am till 5pm.

How do I find my favorite Market business, craftsperson or merchant?
Please visit Pike Place Market’s shopping directory. Still need help? Please email info@pikeplacemarket.org for further assistance.

Can I rent a table to sell a product for just a day or two?
There are day tables for rent at Pike Place Market, but with stipulations. Theses tables or “Daystall” tables, as they are referred as, are specifically rented to permitted farmers who grow their own products and permitted craftspeople who make their own products (who are screened in and then must meet attendance requirements). Pike Place Market does not rent tables on a day-at-a-time basis.

A Wilhelm Scream
How does one gauge the success of a band pushing the envelope of a genre that receives little to no credit by the mainstream media? In the case of A Wilhelm Scream, the answer is “Who cares?” –

As a band playing punk rock for over a decade, members Trevor Reilly, Nuno Pereira, Nick Angelini, Brian Robinson and Mike Supina haven’t focused on success, image or whatever bandwagon a group can jump on to get their music into the ears of listeners: It’s the ideal of music from an honest place, playing to the kids who want to hear more than a simple love song, or want an opinion rammed down their throats.

Despite operating just below the radar A Wilhelm Scream have carved out a reputation as one of the best live bands around, bolstered by their staggeringly rich albums of ultra-technical melodic punk rock firestorms. Playing 250+ worldwide shows each year, the band posses a work ethic best described as ‘heroic’.

The Flatliners
Punk rock used to be about haggard road warriors. Before all the breakdowns and flat irons, there were busted transmissions and collect calls home. The Flatliners grew up believing in the later and rejecting the former, and after seven years playing together, they’re unleashing Cavalcade, their third full-length record and an epic sonic testament to the life they’ve chosen.

Over the last four years, the Flatliners have spent almost thirty months in vans, dive bars, and concert halls across North America, Europe, and Japan, building up a dedicated following with a sound that mixes the endless fury of ’90s skate punk with the nuanced, intelligent songwriting of classic post-punks like the Replacements and Hot Water Music.

After releasing the ska-punk tinged Destroy to Create (Union Label Group) in 2005, the band evolved into a harsh melodic machine with 2007′s The Great Awake (Fat Wreck Chords), completing their transition into a vital modern punk unit with the Cynics 7″ (Fat Wreck Chords) in late 2009.

Such Gold
Such Gold is about sing-a-longs/gang chants, DIY house shows, pile-ons, rad friends, fast-beats, touring, and having good times with good people.

Come share a garbage plate and a Genny with us.

Geoff Rickly
Geoff Rickly is the lead singer and songwriter of Thursday, an American rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. They have released six studio albums. Rickly grew up in Dumont, New Jersey.
Rickly has contributed guest vocals to many songs, including My American Heart’s “We Are the Fabrication”, Murder by Death’s “Killbot 2000″, This Day Forward’s “Sunfalls and Watershine”, and Circa Survive’s “The Lottery.”

Geoff also recently has become extremely popular in the country of Ireland as both a musician and a composer. Lyrically, Rickly has been known to draw from a wide variety of influences, many of them being authors and poets. In a March 2009 interview, he cited the works of Denis Johnson, Martin Amis, Roberto Bolaño and David Foster Wallace as being among his influences for the lyrics of Thursday’s Common Existence album, which was released in February 2009.

A tattoo on his forearm reads “love is love“, a lyric from the band Frail; Rickly adopted these lyrics into Thursday’s “A Hole in the World.” Thursday’s “Autobiography Of A Nation” is clearly influenced by poet Michael Palmer’s “Sun.”

Vinnie Caruana
Singer of the influential band The Movielife and current singer of I Am the Avalanche.

Hey Champ’s roots can be traced outside of Chicago in nearby Rockford, where band members Saam Hagshenas (Vocals, Guitar) and Jonathan Marks (Vocals & Drums) discovered their love of music at a young age. After Saam’s graduation from law school, the two reunite in Chicago under the Hey Champ moniker.

Needing some additional help on the keys, Jonathan calls up his old Princeton chum Pete. The two met as outsiders at one of those tea and crumpet parties where everyone wears blazers and laughs through clenched teeth The band incorporates influences from disco, house and indie rock, while combining the raw energy of Cheap Trick and the synth-heavy productions of Giorgio Moroder and Trevor Horn.

WMNSTUDIES recently captured the blogosphere by storm mixing 80′s and 90′s R&B classics with downtempo electronic beats creating an electronic genre all to themselves – call it “Fuck Jams”. A perfect addition to our SexPop fam.

The Vanilla Mustache and Highway 99 Blues Club join forces on Sunday, June 23rd to present a fundraiser for celebrated artist-activist, singer Candye Kane.

The award-winning blues diva who describes herself as a “fat black drag queen trapped in a white woman’s body” has been a vocal supporter of the LGBT rights and “outsider” and misunderstood communities for more than 20 years.

“This tough cookie wails with a rousing confidence and affirmation of identity and the courage of her convictions” – Downbeat Magazine

“Candye Kane has that big, brassy voice that has authority and sass; the kind of thing men like because it’s seductive and women like because it’s powerful.”- BB King to the San Diego Reader

Candye Kane has been been nominated for five Blues Music Awards, won ten San Diego Music Awards, has starred in a sold-out stage play about her life, and has fought pancreatic cancer over the last two years.

Candye has been a vital supporter of the “outsider” and members of misunderstood communities for her whole career. She has been a role model for the disenfranchised and a champion for large-sized women. She has fought tooth and nail for the equal rights of sexual minorities and the LGBT community, inspiring her music fans all around the world. Her fans consist of bikers, blues fans, punk rockers, drag queens, big girls, queers, burlesque dancers, rockabilly and swing dancers, grey-haired hippies, sex positive feminists, and everyday folk of all ages. Her full-time tour of spreading the message of equality, love, hope and empowerment began in 1992 and has been going strong ever since.

Unfortunately, Candye has been struck mercilessly by pancreatic cancer. While her most recent scans have come back clean, the substantial amount of medical treatments and the loss of income due to recovery time have left her in need of assistance. It is time for all of us, who have been supported for so long by someone as giving and empowering as Candye Kane, to give back in her time of need.

Hosted by MAMA TITS and featuring:
