On March 16, STG is presenting one of Ireland’s most renowned Irish music super-groups, Dervish at the Neptune Theatre in the U-District (Mar 16), with openers Mary Jane Lamond and Wendy MacIsaac, masters of the Cape Breton tradition. Dervish move between blistering, foot-stomping dance tunes and soulful interpretations of Irish songs by lead singer Cathy Jordan, with vocals, fiddle, flute, accordion, bodhrán, mandola and bouzouki. This show will be one of the biggest Celtic music events of the year in Seattle.
About Dervish: The Sligo Borough Council’s decision to award Dervish the Freedom of the Borough of Sligo cemented the group’s position as preeminent band in Ireland’s wild west. It raised them into the exalted company of poet W.B. Yeats, who was the first person to be awarded the freedom of Sligo.
Built upon two sturdy pillars — the hauntingly charismatic vocals of Cathy Jordan and the dazzling virtuosity of award-winning instrumentalists like Tom Morrow on fiddle, Liam Kelly on flute, and Shane Mitchell on accordion, Dervish is a solid structure of a band, its foundation in legendary pub sessions, its shape the result of years of international touring. In the most recent of many honors, Dervish was recently chosen to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2005, just after the group toured China in the company of the Prime Minister, Ireland’s premier music magazine Hot Press voted the band Best Traditional / Folk Group.

This looks wonderful. Lots of fun.
Music is part of Ireland that everyone can enjoy.
We are Irish and love Irish music. My children will put on some Irish music and dance or sing. The whole family loves it. But….it sure would be nice to get out of the house with just my husband to enjoy some great music and each other.
Well, I’m Scottish, so that doesn’t count. I’ve never been to Ireland, so that doesn’t count. I wasn’t born in the month of March, and I don’t eat potatoes (unless ‘sweet’ count). BUT, I love Irish music, Irish dancing, Irish beer, and Irish spirit! And I am fair-skinned.
I’m drawn to Dervish by way of Cathy Jordon, she is a bird on high. My wish is to take an Irish-American friend who lost her daughter last year, to remember what songs to sing to celebrate life.
Hope hope hoping, Ariel
St Patrick’s day is also my husbands birthday! We love Celtic music, and I’d love to take him to this concert! It sounds lovely.
