Celebrate the Feast of Saint Gratus, patron saint of entomophobia (insect fear) with a bug banquet by The Bug Chef, David George Gordon, at Seattle’s Café Racer on Friday, September 7th.
This gastronomical gala will feature an assortment of insect-based dishes, including locust kabobs, mealworm quiche, grasshopper chocolate fondue, and — of course — ants on a log.
The author of the critically acclaimed The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook (c. Ten Speed Press), Gordon has spent the past decade giving cooking demos at locales that include the Smithsonian Institution, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square, Yale University, and Singapore’s Food Festival.
“Last year’s Bug Banquet proved that there’s an outrageously receptive audience for this kind of fare in Seattle,” says Gordon. “I’m delighted that Café Racer is so eager to host this event for the second year in a row.”
In addition to its special bug-based menu, Café Racer will again feature the magnificent mounted insect collection of entomologist Don Ehlen, proprietor of The Insect Safari, an independent education program based in Seattle. Seattle-based Operadisiac and a troupe of entomologically inspired entertainers will provide live music.
“The entire evening is dedicated to Gratus of Aosta,” Gordon explains. “Among his many miracles, Saint Gratus is said to have thwarted a plague of grasshoppers and, in 1450, his name was invoked against a swarm of crop-devastating insects in France.”
Tickets for this one-time-only event are $25 and can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets.
Brown Paper Tickets has created a series of limited-edition Cafe Racer Artist tickets that allow ticket-buyers to give a 25-cent donation to the Victims of the Cafe Racer Shooting Memorial Fund, so please choose that option if available!
