For over 30 years, we’ve been amusing the residents of Ballard and beyond with a sunshine filled weekend of delicious seafood, brilliant & diverse music, local beer, engaging kids stuff and quality crafts. Join us in 2012!
True, it’s not the same old Ballard that was once home to lots of Bestemors and Papas. (Norwegian grandparents) But that doesn’t change the fact that this community possesses a rich Scandinavian heritage. Though less obvious today, it’s still part of our culture and is what makes Ballard, Ballard!
So in 2012, an accordion-playing Bestemor hosts SeafoodFest. She also helps us honor Stan Boreson, a Seattle Accordion Legend, who has opened the festival for many, many years with his Scandinavian humor and crack accordionship.
Earlier this year, we were saddened by the news that our dear Mr. Boreson is ending his days on the stage. Consequently, we spent many hours thinking of a way to honor this man who has given such joy to so many generations. And we had an epiphany—2012 will be all accordions, all the time. Not only will we feature accordions in the wine garden all weekend, but every band on the Ballard Avenue MainStage MUST include an accordion.
Please join us for our annual community celebration and help us pay tribute to a Northwest icon and our history. You’ll experience a festival that is as unique as the community of Ballard itself.
Year after year, SeafoodFest prides itself in offering first-rate professional entertainers. This year is no exception! Two separate stages provide a broad appeal— one for youngsters and their families and the other for those with more grownup tastes. Whether you sit in the beer garden, on the lawn or under a tree, you can enjoy all of our entertainment free of charge. Come for one act or camp out for the whole weekend.
Festivals all the same you say? Not so!
SeafoodFest, now in its 38th year, is a lot like Ballard—special, unique and just a bit quirky!
The most unique attraction is the Annual Lutefisk Eating Contest, which takes place in Bergen Place Park. Contestents gather and see just how much of this delicacy they can eat. (or stomach!) Cash prizes go to those who rise above the others. The winner consumes over 3-1/4 pounds of lutefisk. Sign-ups take place at the festival, beginning two hours prior. And thanks to Scandinavian Specialties, there’ll be plenty of fish for all our contestants.
Entertainment
Mainstage
This year, the MainStage has a lineup as unique as the community of Ballard. Yes, you read it right—it’s all accordions, all the time.
And here’s why. For many years, Stan Boreson, Seattle Accordion Legend has opened the festival with his Scandinavian humor and crack accordionship. But our dear Mr. Boreson has decided to retire from the stage. We were truly saddened by the news and wanted to somehow honor this man who has given such joy to so many generations. And we had an epiphany— Not only will we feature accordions in the wine garden all weekend, but every band on the Ballard Avenue MainStage MUST include an accordion.
Head down to The MainStage, located on Ballard Avenue, and help us pay homage to the mighty squeezebox.
SATURDAY, JULY 14
12 noon Pickled Herring
The perfect 2012 Accordion Mania kickoff, this group
Herring plays a rocking mix of Scandinavian and fishing tunes. FYI, Lori Hanson, the accordion and
lead singer had her first music lessons right in Ballard by none other than Stan Boreson!
1:30 pm The Legendary Oaks
Tuneful Americana, the raucous child of a multiple marriage between the Replacements, the Lovin
Brothers, Merle Haggard, the Burrito Brothers and oh yeah, some REM too.
3:00 pm Matt the Hoopla
Oh-so-local (as in across the street) Glam Rock complete with accordion. Really.
4:45 pm Two Scoops Combo
Playing his own version of N’awlins style boogie woogie, Two Scoops is extra specially adored on
Ballard Avenue for his trademark “SeafoodFest” song.
6:00 pm Reneé de la Prade
All the way from the Bay area, Ms. de la Prade is, perhaps, the only punk accordion diva in the US!
7:45 pm DJ Riz
Best loved KEXP DJ, this man about town helps kick off Ballard’s Second Saturday ArtWalk!
SUNDAY, JULY 15
12 noon Orville Johnson Goes Gospel
A welcome reprise of last year’s incredibly inspirational hand-picked players. When Orville calls, you’ll listen.
1:15 pm Pearl D’Jango
First time ever at SeafoodFest, and also from Ballard, Pearl Django plays high energy gypsy jazz, with a smattering of bluegrass, folk and strings.
2:45 pm Miles & Karina
Always a “Quirkish Delight”, this duo mixes (of course) accordion, banjo, guitar and more. Stylish, a bit avante and always FUN!
4:15 pm Juan Barco
Award winning Tex-Mex songwriter Barco, comes complete with a crack band of seasoned performers.
Together they bring a touch of Texas to Ballard.
5:30 pm Wylie & The Wild West Show
He’s BACK! Yippee and Yahoo! Wylie’s a Cowboy-style homerun every time he graces this SeafoodFest Stage.
