The 42nd Annual Denny’s Seafair Milk Carton Derby will take place on Saturday, July 14! Nearly 100 colorful milk carton boats of all shapes and design will compete on the waters of Green Lake for $10,000 in prizes. The Derby is highlighted by a full day of “competition” as children, adults, families and businesses build milk carton watercraft for show and racing.

Milk Carton Derby Schedule:

8:30 a.m. – Registration and Inspection Opens
10:00 a.m. – Open Category
10:45 a.m. – Racing Category
11:00 a.m. – UNFI Charity Challenge Build Begins
11:15 a.m. – Group/Commercial Category
11:45 a.m. – UNFI Charity Challenge
Noon – Kid’s Area Programming and Mooing Contest and Hula Hoop Contest
12:30 p.m. – Parade of Boats for Showboat Award Judging (non-racing)
12:30 p.m. – Seafair Team Challenge Boat Build begins
1:00 p.m. – Military Category
1:15 p.m. – Seafair Team Challenge Race
1:45 p.m. – Racing & Open Category FINALS

3:00 p.m. – Awards Ceremony at the Denny’s Stage

Boat Categories
The racing, military and open categories are complimentary, there is no charge to enter. 

Racing – Free to Enter
Any craft whose design and intent is primarily speed like skulls, kayaks, surfboards and racing type catamarans will be placed in this category. This race has two sub-categories:
Youth ages 8-13
Adult ages 14 and up
Military – Free to Enter
A special category for our military community, at least one crew member of the milk carton craft must be active duty military.
-A trophy for one year display will be awarded to the military race winner.
-A prize will be awarded to the military race entry judged to have the best design.
Open – Free to Enter
Any style entry other that racing, military or commercial. This category is for entries where design took precedence over speed in the construction. It is still however a race to the finish. This race has three sub categories:
Youth ages 8-13
Adult ages 14 and up
Family – kids up to age 13 with at least one adult
Groups & Commercial – $250 Entry Fee

This category is for groups & Commercial entries. A $250 entry gives your group or company the opportunity to race with a company name, logo or slogan on your vessel. Take the challenge and race to glory on the formidable waters of Seattle’s Green Lake. A minimum of 100 half-gallon cartons or their equivalent is required. This category is not eligible for Showboat or other major price drawings. Entries must meet the conditions of the Open category. 

Each group/commercial participant will receive an official Milk Carton Derby T-shirt.
-Overall winner will be awarded 8 one-day passes to Seafair Weekend (Albert Lee Cup/Boeing Air Show) as well as 10% of collected entry monies donated to the non-profit of their choice.
-Best design in this category wins 4 one-day passes to Seafair Weekend (Albert Lee Cup/ Boeing Air Show). 
NOTE: The racing category is for entries designed for speed. The open category is for entries where design and creative use of milk cartons is the primary purpose but this is still a race. The showboat award is not opened to sponsored groups/commercial or military entrants.

*The inspector will place entries in the racing category if there is a doubt as to the intent of the craft. Open category entries, which seriously outdistance the field, may be reclassified or disqualified by the judges. All rulings are final.

-Attend the boat building demo on Thursday, June 28 from 6pm-8pm at Denny’s in SODO (4th Avenue S – between Lander and Forrest)!
Need milk cartons? Seafair thanks Smith Brothers Farms for donating cartons! If you’d like to start building your derby boat, cartons will be available for pick up at the Seafair office. Please contact Andrew Scott at (206) 728-0123 or andrew@seafair.com to schedule an appt. Milk cartons are provided at no cost and while supplies last.

Activities on Water…and on Land!
There will be plenty of activities on shore as well – including interactive displays and exhibits, autographs and picture opportunities (Seafair Clowns, Seafair Princesses, The SeaGals – and more!) and plenty of food booths! Exhibitors will include: Denny’s, Albert Lee Appliance, Talking Rain Beverage Company, Whole Foods Market and UNFI!  Some of the family-fun activities will include an Albert Lee Hydroplane Build and Tow, as well as a hula-hoop and moo-ing contest!
UPWARD BOUND in the FIFTH DIMENSION is a barbershop quartet who will be performing the National Anthem for the Milk Carton Derby! The quartet will be singing to crowds and to individuals as well!

Kids Entertainment Area
We can’t forget about the kids! There is a whole play space for you, check it out and you’ll find fabulous and fun activities to enjoy! In the kid’s entertainment area there will be two inflatables, the Seafair Clowns, a Pacific Science Center activity, the Seafair Princesses, Sally and the Pigs, face painting, and a booth by Clowns Unlimited!
You can find the Kid’s Entertainment Area at the southwest end of the event site.

Qualifying entries must include the Taco Time logo somewhere on the boat. Boats will be judged on Northwest spirit and creative incorporation of Taco Time.
1st place: Taco Time lunch for a year
2nd place: $75 Taco Time Cactus Card and a goody bag full of Taco Time Northwest swag
3rd place: $25 Taco Time Cactus Card.Radio Disney AM 1250 – Seattle.  Your Music. Your Way!Radio Disney AM 1250 wants to know the 411 about your music – your way!  Design your boat to show your favorite Radio Disney artist, song or location where you listen. We will even give you a head start with logos and graphics to download. We turned up the volume on prizes you can win with your creativity! You could be that special Radio Disney guest to join us in Los Angeles for the kick off of “N.B.T.”  Anytime. Anywhere!, we love the way you listen. To qualify, you must include Radio Disney AM 1250 logo somewhere on your boat.

Awards Ceremony
Awards will be given for each of the race categories. Additionally, all participants will receive a raffle ticket. Raffle winners will be announced at the awards ceremony. Other awards include the Showboat Award (chosen by the Milk Carton Derby Race Committee) and the Denny’s Award.
